KOSHER AUSTRALIA PESACH UPDATE (April 15 2008, Nissan 10 5768)
Please note the following updates to the recently-released Guide to Pesach 2008 (also available on our website, www.kosher.org.au/Pesach.htm). The online version varies from the printed one mailed out in that it has an index at the back.
GENERAL REMINDERS
1. When purchasing products that are approved for Pesach but not formally certified for Pesach, these must be purchased before Pesach commences.
2. Labels bearing words similar to “Kosher for Pesach/Passover” but without the endorsement of a rabbinic authority should not be used. Instances have been found where such labels have been applied by manufacturers, brokers or importers despite the fact that there has actually been no supervision or certification for Pesach.
3. Chometz that is owned by a Jew over Pesach may never be used subsequently. Therefore, one must either sell it prior to Pesach or dispose of all of it. This may be done by downloading the form from the Kosher Australia website (www.kosher.org.au/Pesach.htm), completing it, and faxing it through to 03 9527 5665. The forms must be received by this Thursday. There are facilities to do this online such as http://www.cosv.org.au/index.php?article=152.
MEDICINES/PHARMACEUTICALS/INFANT:
1. We have been advised by Rabbi Adler of England that Bonjela is not Kosher for Pesach this year. Delete it from page 12 of the Guide for Pesach. [It remains kosher for the rest of the year.]
2. The listing on Gaviscon (p. 12 column 2) should read "Gaviscon - all liquids except Gaviscon-Infant".
3. A reminder that Metamucil Orange, Regular (p. 12) contains kitniyos and should be used in separate utensils (as per the general note on all medicines).
4. A reminder that Isomil (p. 12) contains kitniyos and should be used in separate utensils (as per the general note on all medicines).
5. The Kashrut Authority (NSW) have advised that the following Baby formulae are dairy (non Cholov Yisroel) and acceptable for Pesach when marked as ‘Product of New Zealand’ and when purchased before Pesach:

6. The following is a list of ORAL medicines from our 2008 all year round Kosher Australia Food Guide that have been identified as free of Chometz. These are Over the Counter (OTC) oral pharmaceutical medications/products and, understandably, this list largely overlaps that as printed on pp 11-13 in the Guide to Pesach. Much of this information came to hand after the Guide to Pesach was released. The only deletion was Bonjela (see 1 above).

KITNIYOS
1. Please check labels as they normally give a clue to kitniyos status. For example:
a. Words such as “Kosher L’Ochlei Kitniyot” (Kosher for those who eat Kitniyos) are permitted only for members of some Sephardi communities. Members of Sephardi communities should contact their Rabbi for advice as to the custom within their particular community.
b. Words such as “suitable for Pesach/Passover” rather than “Kosher for Pesach/Passover” usually means the presence of actual “Kitniyos” or “Kitniyos SheNishtanu” (referring to Kitniyos that have changed from their original form, e.g. aspartame, corn syrup, etc.). Please note this distinction is used even by agencies such as the OU. The product labeled OUP is kitniyos free. Products labeled OU with the added words “Suitable for Passover/ Pesach” contain “Kitniyos SheNishtanu”.
2. Most “Diet” products (such as Diet Coke, etc.) contain sweeteners that are derived from Kitniyos and are, therefore, not recommended for Pesach use by Ashkenazi communities.
3. Aside from containing kitniyos, soy-milk products and rice-milk products available in Australia contain chometz additives. For those who are infirm or for infants, please ring Rabbi Mordechai Gutnick to discuss the possibilities.
4. Fennel (p. 7) is noted as being kitniyos – that should have read fennel seed.
5. Consumers are advised in all cases of possible Kitniyos ingredients to contact their Rabbi for guidance as to the custom or ruling applicable to their particular community.
MISCELLANEOUS
1. In the list of Astoria products (p. 5) the warning that as it contains non-Kosher ingredients it is not to be used on food or on food-grade utensils applies to the ‘Soap on Tap’ only.
2. ‘Pricebreakers’ (p. 5) and ‘Cost Cutters’ are the same company.
3. As noted (p. 10 point 6), most pet food contains Chometz. Pesach-suitable pet food (investigated by the Beth Din of Johannesburg) is available from Sharona Zaks, Elsternwick Veterinary Clinic, 627 Glenhuntly Road, Caulfield 3162 (03 9532 9845) and from Alex's Delicatessen, Glen Huntly Rd.
4. Retailers are selling repacked nuts and dried fruit without Kosher certification. Such products are not recommended.
5. Dried fruits may contain vegetable oil, dextrose and/or flour which may be kitniyos or even Chometz. These should be purchased for Pesach use only when carrying a reputable Kosher for Pesach certification.
